Alan
Interesting post, and quite topical on the loch at the moment. With you being a ferox85 guy and that your opinion would be welcome.
The loch has never been a great water for Brownies (including ferox) however it has always been prolific for Sea trout kelts and overwintered Sea trout that don't return to the sea for quite some time.
Recent research by the University Research including acoustic tagging of the Sea trout has shown that the Sea trout in the Lomond catchment area spend a lot of their time feeding in the loch outwith any spawning activity. They swim up feed, stay for ages, feed in the river, back to estuary and so on and on!
After spawning the loch is full of Sea trout kelts which quickly get back into condition feeding on the roach etc, but crucially don't leave till the notion takes them. Some stay for ages, and colour and condition don't look a lot different from the fish above.
I asked one of the biologists last week if these become Ferox or whatever? He quoted the Ferox 85 group motto to me "All Ferox are Brown Trout but not all Brown trout are Ferox". Maybe we need to add the words "or Seatout" to the motto.
Got a load of pics of similar fish caught on deadbaits when Pike fishing over the years. My view is that they are Sea trout but would welcome your opinion. The areas you are getting the fish (and Richie Millar) does have a large concentration of overwintered Sea trout in the early part of the year. But the acoustic tagging shows they like to stay there as well.
Your views would be appreciated.

Alan i dont do it now but did take scale samples from the trout i was catching for a few years i gave them to Aya Thorne who after doing his thing came to the conclusion most of these fish were loch trout only a few showed signs of having been to sea at some point.
For some reason smaller brown trout seem scarce on the loch. Ferox id say not so scarce its simply a massive body of water and no one fishes for them.
There was a similar thing with loch Shiel many of the seatrout came into the loch and stayed locals said it was because life was so easy onvthe loch with all the fish cages on it. Definitely a possibility.
Aya was called in as a court witness when a group of anglers were charged with killing migratory fish the estate wanted them charged for killing seatrout. When the scale reading was done again they showed these fish were loch trout and the charges had to be dropped.

I thought a sea trout was a brown trout that went to sea for better feeding?as salmon do?but a ferox trout was a deep water trout which predates on char and small trout?

Lovely fish, that top one is so silvery I would have confused it for a sea trout.
