Still got two left from five Si, Custard and Meeme, Tiddler was an exceptional character of all the cats we have had through our door which is believe it or not well over 300 my wife and I used to be the kitten department for the local cats protection and we have had 15 of our own over the years.
Still prefer dogs though, had 5 in my life, feckers pull on the heart
Cheers Alan

Re: Goodbye to mans best friend
Sorry for your loss, Si. It's a heartbreaking decision to make, and one I had forced on me in August 2015. Holly (my GSD) was over 14 years old, and maintained good mobility and standard of life until her final weeks, and even though you know it's coming it's still a crushing blow. I decided, same as Monts did, that her ashes are staying with me until my time comes.
Even though my heart wasn't really in it, I jumped straight back into the saddle with a pup (another GSD) and I'd totally forgotten what hard work a pup can be! Abi will be two in June and she's an amazing dog but I'll forever miss my Holly

He was actually 12yrs and 1 day old, i retired him at 9 yrs old due to his back legs showing signs of a problem, he always looked at me as if to say "Dad are you taking me to work tonight" as i left the house with my other GSD. Both dogs are now gone and their ashes are scattered on a long grass verge in town lined with Cherry tree's and daffs. Thanks for the advice nige, you have hit the nail on the head,he normally follows me everywhere, its very weird, the wife is in bits, really wasn't nice having his head in my arms whilst he went but I owed it to him.Surprising how us tough old fishing folk can be reduced to crying babies by things like this, the vet patted me on the back but looked like he felt a bit awkward seeing an eighteen stone bearded rugby bloke in tears, must be a tough job sometimes I guess, i thanked him for the time he gave me at the end to say goodbye and doing the job sensitivity.
Just to add to that, i had to walk him to the vet to have him put down, not far from my house but he was so excited thinking that he was going on one of his short walks, it was heart renching as i knew what lay ahead and he didn't.

Sorry to hear about this Si. It has to be one of the most difficult things we can go through.
Its a cliche I know but you just got to do your best for them and be happy you know you gave them a good life. They certainly enrich ours!
As others have said lots of people on here including myself have Border terriers. They've cracking dogs! Although not small for terriers they may be a little on the small side for you but at 6'1" mines good for me.

Re: Goodbye to mans best friend
Sorry to hear your news Si. As a 14 year old I carried my somewhat mental short-haired border collie to the vets surgery after the mange done for her. I was very sad for a long time after that.
Although I always loved dogs I never got another one after Meg, my childhood mutt yet when I met my missus she had a little Shih Tzu pup called Alfie and never in my life have I ever met anyone more popular. Everyone takes to him and he's been a cracking little dog. She got another one (Fizz) a couple of years later and they truly are lovely little creatures. They are utterly loyal, the female (Fizz) absolutely dotes on the kids and in fairness, they do have the heart of lions. Beautiful little animals, Alfie is 11 next month and Fizz 8 and both are showing a little bit of age nowadays.

Re: Goodbye to mans best friend
Sorry for your loss Si, hope you've come through the worst of it and are starting to explore what breed to get next
Out with my two Bedlington Whippets right now as I read this, got a lump in my throat and a pain in my chest reading all the comments, I dread the day Bert & Ernie leave me but if you think about it too much you'd never get a dog in the first place, just have to treasure the time with them, bar my immediate family they are the most important thing in the world to me, I even bought a house close to work so I can go and see them every lunchtime!
I'm not sure there's a more accurate saying than "a dog is a mans best friend"

Re: Goodbye to mans best friend
I've only just found this - A lot of what I've read in this thread resonates with me, sorry for yours and everyone else's loss Si. I lost Lucydog to Liver Cancer, back in Sept last and chose for the vets to come to my home to put her to rest. In my dreams, it was going to be almost romantic and create some positive memories out of a very negative scenario. Sadly it was anything but that and put in the same position again I'd quite likely get someone else to take the dog to the vets next time? On the up side, I'm just finding myself becoming VERY interested in getting another dog and will likely go down the Border or Border / Jack cross route again?
