Hooklink Braid

Post by Jason Skilton »

Been using the Drennan Sinkbraid for some years and I've found out that they have discontinued it which is a great shame.

Been using it in the 8lb BS for some years and cant fault it. Bought their replacement gravel brad, but it feels a lot different.

Looking for a weedy coloured sinking braid in 8lb BS if anyone has come recommendations.

Braid (PE) is bouyant and impervious so some material has to be added to the exterior to make it sink.
I would try pulling normal (dry) braid through a lump of tungsten putty a few times to produce your own 'sinking braid'.

I would try it for you but dont have any putty.
If you try it and it works, let us know.

Not yet.....any suggestion on which one Dave?

Also been looking at the Kyston Merlin and the Gardner Target Speciskins....can find plenty of review on the Kryston but not many on the Gardner.

I can't think which ESP braid I tried. I'm not keen on Merlin. But to be honest I don't think it matters much to the fish which braid you use. I use Mason Tigerbraid - which is a mainline - for barbel!

Is hooklength braid not different to mainline stuff given braids ability to slice through yer fingers

I dunno i never use it but im sure this is the case. Different weave or something else  im probably wrong.

In theory hooklink braids are flatter (that was Krystons big marketing strategy in the early days) - but with very thin braids it's irrelevant.

There's an explanation on fish safety by dave Chilton somewhere on the net where he describes how his hooklinks flatten under pressure from the lips and avoids the cutting issue.

Is it the drennan super specialist sink braid you are after?

I might have a spool knocking around. If I have you can have it for a few quid.

I remember it being a browny colour.

I'm usually allergic to F*X, but the last few seasons I've used their Reflex hook length braid in 15lbs for tench and bream. It's nice and soft, sinks far better than Merlin and is a dull weedy green colour for those who are concerned about such things.
Marcraft are for queers.
