Fastest bird
In level flight the fastest bird is officially the white billed spine tailed swift, by all accounts the brown billed spine tailed swift is just as fast, but it cant pull up as quick!

Re: Fastest bird
It was always the 'Alpine Swift' in my books as a kid that was labelled the fastest bird in level flight. Obviously the Peregrine gets the award for achieving the fastest speed in flight of any bird.
I suspect 'level flight' has to include a strong tail wind which begs the question is that any less of an additional dynamic than the falcon's speed being recorded during hunting dives?
