Times are changing for mole catchers

I haven't seen dead moles strung along barbed wire for many a year now. If today's find is anything to go by Mr M.Catcher throws them in a tub and leaves that as evidence he's done his job these days. Might be just enough there to make a waistcoat...

OH YES I HAVE !
We do get the odd mole and all I do is sweep the dirt up or get the leaf blower on it, if they became a real problem I don't know what I would do to be fair, but I wouldnt want to kill them!
The worse thing about our lawn at the mo is all the ducks orgies that are going on and the fecking canada geese making up a strong brass band

When I had my boarding kennels I had about half an acre of lawns and the road frontage to mow. The moles were a feckin nightmare, as fast as you did one lot the next lot would move in. Tried all sorts to discourage them---none worked for long.

they could have been part of the eco system in the thousands of acres around my boarding kennels, which all seemed molehill free---but no, they wanted to be on my bit of land

rags dipped in creosote/paraffin, paint, ferret pooh, moth balls ---you name it and it went down their holes to no avail. The little feckers just went down deeper or became surface runners just under the turf (if you were quick with the spade you could catch these feckers)
Those caught in the traps wernt wasted, they got chucked on the stable roof for the owls

Chinning moles on a barbed wire fence, now that brings back some fond memories.
Somewhere I have a 100+ pic if I can find it.
Although I have my traps they haven't been used for a couple of decades (never used strychnine) these days green house fumigation cones are the instant remedy, thats if I cant snaffle the blighter when he is 'pushing up'!

At £3.12/patch that tub could be worth a bob or two?

I'm no green namby pamby ,Mike I just dont like the killing of things for killings sake so I ask is there a reason for the killing of all those moles is is it just for the sake of killing?

I like Moles but I did kill the one that got in my well fed watered lawn during a hosepipe ban. I saw the earth moving and twatted it with a 2 1/2 pound sledge hammer Felt awful after.

the gibbet was a way of showing your employer you were doing your job (groundsman, gamekeepers all had one in the bad old days)

they will all eat any carrion at the side of the road---so why not a string of dead moles? strange

It is an odd one. You'd think magpies would have them away if nothing else did.

Another reason for stringing them up was to stop mole catchers taking moles from one job to another to get paid twice. In the days they were paid by the mole!
