An ambition realised

Post by Daniel »

I've always wanted a bird but knew I couldn't give one the time and attention it requires so I've done nothing more than look at them longingly everytime I popped into the pet shop to collect supplies for my reptiles.
Things changed a while a go though. Monica's moved out and has her own income and when my dad, who I work with, decided he was going to cut down his hours, I thought sod it, and did the same myself!

I made a list of the birds I'd like, then began to research each of them.
I finally decided on a blue throated conure I've called Alfie, he's a cheeky boy and a very fast learner who loves me coming home and spending time with him.

Can they be taught to speak Daniel ?
We had an African Grey (Joey) in the family for about 50-60 years, it was my wife's grannies bird and was handed down to whoever would have him to be honest, he was a great talker though.
If it is still alive it would be well over 60 years old by now.

They can usually manage a few words but thats about it, certainly nothing like the vocabulary of an african grey.
Sadly the birds that make the best talkers are also the most demanding in terms of the attention they want or they're really noisy, not great when you live in a flat!

I chose Alfie partly because of his looks and partly because although the breed makes noise, they're not loud, its just chirping in the background, no big deal at all.

They typically live over twenty years, I've found a couple of owners during my research with blue throated conures over thirty years old!
