Engine - 2-stroke vs leccy - advice please!

Fellas, I'm looking to buy an engine - going halves with a mate. And we know nothing (very little) about them.

We'll use it maybe once a month, for a weekend. Plus maybe 2 x week long trips where it's used every day. So something like 20-30 sessions a year, when you take out the close season. When not in use, it'll be in his shed. So we want something reliable, that won't need frequent use to keep it in good nick. And ideally not super heavy, as we'll spend as much time lugging it from his shed, to the car, to the boat and back. I think this rules out four stroke. So it's two stroke or electric. We'll use it in Norfolk / Suffolk - so half the time it'll be on a Broad, half the time on a river - potentially with some tidal pull too.

We're Norfolk & District Pike Club members, so it'll be on a range of boats - there's a 14ft Seastrike, a Dory, other boats more pointy and easily manoeuvrable.

Key questions;
- Some waters are electric-only. So our preference would be to buy electric. Will newer / more powerful electric set ups be able to cope with current + tide in a river? And moving about all day. Ideally without having an enormous battery.
- If so, is there any reason why we'd be better off buying two-stroke?
- We're presuming buying new-ish but second hand gives much better value - is this the same with electric?
- What kind of voltage / wattage etc should we look for?
- Rough budget - to do the job we're after, are we looking at £150 or £500?

Any advice would be hugely appreciated! Cheers.

Buy an electric and a petrol. Use fuel stabiliser in petrol outboard if it will be stored without long periods of use.

Why two stroke? 4hp mariner outboards are a good outboard and not to heavy. Honda do a light 2.3 air cooled outboard which is cheap and light but a little bit noisy but a cracking little outboard.

Like a clown I ran out of petrol on one of the rivers you sound like your fishing, had to do a mile and a half on my 55lb thrust min Kota to get back and against a decent tide I really would not recommend it! If you are going to do the Broadland rivers you definitely need a petrol, the seastrike you mention goes ok with 4hp on the back but I wouldn't go any smaller 👍remember some of the clubs waters are electric outboard only though👍

Might be worth asking some of the guys at NADP, some of them have torqeedo electrics.

If it was'nt for the leccy only waters, I would say a small 4 stroke is the most reliable option. A lot of anglers still use 2 strokes but they're dinosaurs and not very environmentally friendly either. Something like a 2.5 or 3.5 (same unit) mercury or mariner would run all day for about £2-3 of juice and at around 17kg will weigh a fair bit less than a leccy+battery. I'd avoid the 2 or 2.3 Honda, they're light but they're air cooled and absolutely deafening when you have to sit next to one. :no: :laughs:

A Torqeedo electric would cover everything but you’ll see no change out of £1k for the unit and a spare battery is + several £100’s
If you want to utilise all of the NDPC fleet you’ll need both petrol & electric. For £500 ish you might well find a reasonable second hand 4hp 4stroke & electric, but reliable batteries are a must & will set you back more. The best bet weight wise for batteries is 2 X 70-80 ah 12v jobbies.

Welcome to my world for the last 2 years :laughs:
I had persisted with an electric motor and 110mAh battery which has served me well.
It wasn't really until I fished with somebody else (with a petrol engine) that it really stood out to me how much of a slowpoke I was on the Broads. Very slow and restricted to the distance away from where the boats are moored up, just in case the battery ran out. Also, nightmare if caught out on one of the big Broads on those windswept expanses of water - nowhere near enough power.

Now however, I have a secondhand petrol outboard and things have got much easier!
Plus I can get to places I couldn't reach before.

Get both, even if old but working well. You won't regret it.

I make that about right. I have all three...... Petrol, Minn Kota and Torqueedo and use the later by far the most but they are now nearly 2k with the spare battery and the build quality is such that I would not buy a second hand one unless I had a really good look at it first. Its also crap in weedy broads for summer trips. So on balance pick up a Minn Kota for for £150 and a long shaft petrol around 4hp although the little 2.3hp Hondas and Yamahas are great value. Many of our boats will be built for short shaft (or standard as they a correctly laballed) but you can use a long shaft on any boat but not a short shaft when a long is needed.

I'm a NDPAC member and have a 32lb thrust minn-kota for broads and a 3.5HP Tohastu (as its not too heavy) for tidal rivers. As the guys say you can't afford to d1ck about on massive broads or tidal rivers, having been forced to row on both back in the day due to poor kit choice.
