Pike fly fishing outfit

Post by Ayrshire piker »

Anyone any recommendations on a fly fishing outfit for going after some big pike?

Done plenty of trout fly fishing but starting out for pike from scratch.

Looking at the below outfit 🤔

Cheers in advance for any input

Dont waste money on kits, wait and see if you like it or better still if you (can) catch.
Any #5 reel will do it as long as it holds the line, your never going to chuck a bugie far whatever you using, as we know Pike don't run hard they just bore off on short bursts, exactly as they do when hooked on other methods.
As for a rod I would start with an old Avon or the Shakey sea fly rod with the up handle if you can find one, but something with butt power is an essential.

I must renew my membership to be fair.
It’s not a busy forum like this one
And it may take a day or two to get an answer to a question.
If memory serves me right most use a fb page, but I’m old school and don’t do Facebook.
There’s one or two of the pit on there as well .
Best of luck

Second joining the PFFA, I've recently started pike fly fishing and very helpful to me. But you do have to go on their FB page I'm afraid!

Id second not buying a kit. If you already fly fish your half way there anyway. Get a 10# weight outfit 2nd hand. Beware of the budget rods, wont mention any names, but most are crap. Plenty good ones out there.
Best of luck and join the PFFA!!

Is it the new or old type big daddy? What's your price for the set?
