Thinking about having a go fly fishing for our favorite predator, have had a read up on various web sites and it seems like i need a 9 or 10 ft 9wt rod wide cassette type reel and an intermediate wf or shooting head line ? how am i doing? where is the best place to go for these without breaking the bank? any help appreciated, thanks.

It was around £250.00 but I've seen them online at £179.00 recently. I think they are bringing out a new version so the older version may be hard to get. I was surprised at how easy it all is to cast, I did get a line basket also which helped a fair deal.Thinking about having a go fly fishing for our favorite predator, have had a read up on various web sites and it seems like i need a 9 or 10 ft 9wt rod wide cassette type reel and an intermediate wf or shooting head line ? how am i doing? where is the best place to go for these without breaking the bank? any help appreciated, thanks.

Convert an IKEA Forsiktig into a line basket £6
Use a softish 10ft Avon and tape on a clamp-on type reel seat lower down £5
An Okuma Airframe 7/9 will get you started £17 (used one for Bassing for years).
Dont buy a line until you know the size of fly your chucking - see recent post on this subject, expensive fly lines are not an essential.
Pick up a cheapo fly vice for DIY from girlie hair extensions, xmas trimmings, glittery parcel tapes, braid and nail varnish.
Dont forget a BIG net!

I started out using a Shakespeare sea fly rod 4 pc worked ok with an old Okuma mainframe. Agree with. Like J work out how big/heavy the fly is before picking a line. My advice is start relatively small and ideally water shedding synthetics. Rabbit base flys can be heavy when wet so can make your casting harder
