Had to put Ruby down last Tuesday as her liver had packed in, gutted but it was the right thing to do.She was a cracking fishing dog and had been a constant attachment to my side for the last 12 years.

Feel for you Pete, I’ve said on here many times how hard it was putting mine down a couple of years ago, but like you said when the time has come you have to do the right thing👍

Not easy mate as we know, I couldn't go in the vets in these times of social distancing so I drove my estate round the back and sat on the boot edge and held her as she slipped away, no way was I just handing her over, to be fair the vet was sound.

Very sad news Pete. It wasnt difficult to see that you loved her. I sorted a few photos of my lurcher Jed out over the furlough period and I don't mind admitting that it made me blub. He was an amazing little rabbiting dog and had a few hares to boot.

The picture quality is poor as they're photos of photos, but I think you can see how handsome he was. He looked like a vampire with his ears up and the fangs on his chest.

1986 what a year. I was 23. My mum died in August. My dad died Xmas Eve and in the new year my grandad, the last of my grandparents, died in March.

Two weeks later my lurcher died of unknown causes.

I think that made losing my dog an even tougher thing to deal with.

They become part of the family Chris, I have lost dogs when I worked them but Ruby was different and I don't think I will get another dog now tbh, the Mrs is adamant she won't go through that again.
Your lurched was a stunner mate, the prick ears used to show up a lot in Alsation crosses, though They were quite rare, what was the cross Chris?, colliexgrey x whippet?.

He was a Bearded Collie x Greyhound mix Pete. He was quite small compared with other Greyhound crosses but he was as sharp as a tack! Ive never seen a better dog for rabbits but he had a hard mouth. He,'d pick a rabbit up and drop it almost instantly and it would be split open and dead as a dodo. He could take hares too though he wasnt as fast as my mate's Deerhound cross.

It was a long time ago now Hugs. Yes I'm seriously considering getting another dog. I really like Datschunds but I'm not sure their little legs would make for long walks The only thing that has stopped me getting another us that I live on my own and I couldn't have it at work with me on some jobs.

The dog I put picture up (above this post) needs two 20 minutes walk a day.But we do walk her a tad more than that.

I didn't see the picture before. She looks a lovely dog! Great temperaments as well I find with gaze hounds.

Yes shes our fourth greyhound rescue. We wouldn't have any other breed now.We intend to use her as a pat dog once this covid thing is over as she has such a great temperament.

Powerful dog though and she is only 27kg.

Surprisingly gentle creatures though, providing you're not a hare. They often make great companions for the elderly.

I remember my mate's dad used to race a few dogs at a local flapping track. He brought a great big tan dog out with him for a walk on our local heath and had it off the lead when a late work rider appeared in the distance fast cantering a two year old. The dog spotted it and took off like a rocket after it. Luckily they cant' outstride a thourougbred horse and the dog gave voice, a sure sign they cant catch what they're chasing, otherwise he could have been looking at damages into 6 figures. :afraid:

Lovely dog Huggs mate!

Having lost my little Alfie in Feb, we now just have Fizz (both Shih Tzu's) who's never been on her own her whole life. She's 11 now and we're going to wait until this Covid s**t is over and get another one. Missus is thinking a rescue dog, I don't honestly know tbf.

Hate how the mind works,
I’ve just come back from a funeral & looked at our 15 year old Springer & thought is the last time I’m going to have to get her clipped!

Only a Dog owner would understand eh!

15 for a springer is a bloody good age.

It’s always heartbreaking when they go. But as long as they’ve been loved and had a good life you know you’ve given them (and they’ve given you ) the best life they could have

Just remember the good times
