Anyone get out and put a bend in their rod today?

Post by martin(rockape) »

Up at 0530 sharp for a day on the bank loaded up the car and just a mile or so from the venue and I realised I'd forgotten my Blood testing kit (Type 1 Diabetic) so had to turn around, felt realy p@ssed off with myself for that.

A bit of a chilly morning but I chose the bank which would and did get most of the sun when it did come out from time to time.

First fish was a bream followed by lovely roach.
It was slow going but I managed 2 skimmers and a little mirror carp followed by a common for 9Lb 8oz. Had to pack up at 1400 but walked away happy.

The mirror was not much more than a couple of pounds but a lovely looker and my wife's favourite fish hence the photo. Should also say all fish caught using a homemade reed waggler which I made just over the last few weeks.

Just to add to that it was nice to hear a Woodpecker going about its business in the woods on the opposite bank and Red Kites scouting the waters surface from above, One of which took a roach or skimmer from just below the surface of the lake only a few metres from me.

No despite my best intentions.

I intended to hit a local mark for some (probably improbable) lure fishing for Bass. More to try out some new gear, which I was expecting the last few pieces to turn up today but didn't.

North to northeasterlys and shitty conditions saw me extending my lock down instead

Always tomorrow

Now going to see if I can find a nice quiet water nearby..........can’t wait.

Weather not that brilliant, i was originally going to have a morning session tomorrow before i go to work that night but have thought better of it and decided to hang on till my next day off and go next Thursday or Friday in the hope that it will have warmed up by then.

Originally planned to go today for an appropriately distanced 'social' with the Young Pretender. However, as it transpired, his wife (who works at the same care home as my daughter) had to work, so he had to stay in with his little girl). Best laid plans etc. . . .

But we're going tomorrow!

I'll be trying an experimental carp bait. I've got some sandeels left over from the winter, so I'm going to cut them into little 'bite sized' sections

Also got some nice new wagglers to use, that I made during lockdown.

Up at 4am, but I was fairly blunt! On the water before first light but forgot the sounder battery. Unfortunately, nine other boats out in a fairly small area making the most of the weather. Small bass early but the one in the photo (43 cm) hit my plastic and bent my rod and took line - quite a nervous fight with a single hook hold.

43cm bass.JPG
Dropped the next two which soured the session a little - but that is fishing...

Tight lines, Andy

(Nice bass Andy, I'd rather have been fishing for those! ).

But I got out today on my local carp lake. A place I always fish with vintage tackle.

The place was packed and for the first hour everyone seemed to be catching but me! To rub it in, a teenage lad near me was bagging up on the long pole. He must have had about Β£5k worth of kit, but he certainly knew how to use it.

I'd still not caught by the time the Young Pretender dropped in next to me, an hour later!

This is a place where a solitary bait will usually catch, but seeing how much bait people were piling in, I decided to follow suit. It took a while to get them going, but I finished with ten carp. (The Young Pretender had just one! :pipe: ).

The chopped up sandeels worked to bring the fish on, but interestingly only as feed - not as a hook bait. All the fish came at close range, on the (homemade) float.

Love the carp and the vintage gear! I bought a Cardinal 57 recently because I couldn't afford them when they were released - great reel. What is the rod and where can I buy those reel fittings?

DSC_0673.JPG

The mirror was not much more than a couple of pounds but a lovely looker and my wife's favourite fish hence the photo. Should also say all fish caught using a homemade reed waggler which I made just over the last few weeks.

Just to add to that it was nice to hear a Woodpecker going about its business in the woods on the opposite bank and Red Kites scouting the waters surface from above, One of which took a roach or skimmer from just below the surface of the lake only a few metres from me.

Yes, love it. The only thing I can pick fault with is the handle unlike my Addcock Stanton the handles are quite close to the rim and i quite often get my fingers in the way. On the Addcock the handles are set a little further in. 2 very different pin's i know.

Not quite as vintage as ray but the ole John Wilson specialist saw some action today, couple of mudpigs to ten pound and a modest tench. All caught float fished on home made float and on the pin about a rod length out on corn, lovely evenings sport😬the cuckoo was singing all evening tooπŸ‘

I moved the line guard for trotting Andy ( when I do use it backwards)and haven’t been bothered to put it back since re spooling it with 8lb line for tench,so it is the right way round just looks a**e about face. Love playing half decent fish on a pin , the thumb as a clutch takes some beatingπŸ‘I’m hoping mr Berry will put me on some barbel trotting on it in a month or two if I ask nicely😬

Really enjoyed it thanks RayπŸ™‚As I get older I like using tackle from my youth, was magic seeing the bend in the specialist, I had one when I was about ten and been itching to use this one which I bought a few months ago, more fun way of catching carp, that’s for sureπŸ‘

At Β£150 for mint condition its got to be a bargain. My Mrs gave me a voucher for a local tackle shop for my 60th so put quite a few sheckes towards it, did manage to get Β£30 knocked off it which was a bonus.

I was very intrigued by those reel fittings too Andrew. In fact so much that I posted a thread a while ago to see if anyone knew about them.

Thursday was the first opportunity I had to use the rod since acquiring it. The reel fittings work well, but the rod was really a bit too light in the tip for carp, although it handled them well enough. I think it will be a better roach rod!

It was the first time I'd used the old Cardinal 54 too. Big thanks to Pit member Alan Unthank who very kindly sent me a couple of spools for it after the original spool exploded!

Hi John
Thanks for the link. I put Fuji camlock reel fittings on an old Davenport and Fordham Gerry Savage carp rod and they work OK but no longer available.
I hope my 57 spool doesn't explode! I want to use it and made some carbontex washers - perhaps braid is the go rather than stretchy mono?

Try insulation tape instead of backing line before spooling up. It might cushion the spool!

Cheers, Andy
There's a guy on eBay who makes and sells custom aluminium spools for Cardinal reels Andy. I bought a couple for my 57s and they are perfect. He only seems to make them in small batches and there are none listed presently but they appear quite regularly.

They're not hugely expensive - Β£28 each, plus postage, but they seem pretty bombproof.

Re: Anyone get out and put a bend in their rod today?

Post by Bob Watson »

Had my first trip out today.

Fished a small method feeder on :lumby: avons and had half a dozen carp to 5/6lb and a few skimmers, a little but quite nice and natural commercial two minutes from my door, it was rammed which made the fishing quite hard.
