Low profile options

Post by chrisG »

I'm getting back into lure fishing, and reel-wise was just going to get what I was previously using, which was either a 5501C3 or 5601C3 - i cant remember and not sure of the difference! but would like to look at low profile equivalents first. What are the decent options at a similar price point?

5601c3 has a thumb bar, 5501c3 just has a push button spool release

Cheers Mark, it was a 5501 then.

On a different topic are you still making and selling lures?

Yes mate still making lures. Cut work down though for health reasons so only selling limited numbers per month, on FB mostly. Had i kept going at the rate i was, i`d have ended up with chronic COPD before long due to all the dust etc. As it is, my lungs are pretty wrecked now but it could have been much worse.

Good to hear you're still at it, although make sure to look after yourself mate, your health is all important.

I'll get the missis to let me use her FB to take a look as I'm still holding out against FB (although hypocritically I use Instagram owned by FB for my photography all the time😂)

There`s pics of a fair few vintage style baits i`ve done on the nostalgia forum on here, just stuff i`ve made for myself

Jon Sykes has a few 5000 size abus..... but for a low profile in that size the smaller Tranx and Curado 201K are a really good shout.

All gone John, I've no large reels just now - just sold a new Okuma Komodo today which was my last spare. There's real difficulties in supplies of some reels - Tranx are almost impossible to find.
Personally in the current climate I'd be looking at a Curado K or Daiwa Tatula, both in the new 300 sizes as they seem to be available in places - probably because they are new to the market.

Are those reels compatible with 80lb+ braid and what line capacity are they

The 201k is suggested loaded with between 30 and 65lb PowerPro ....80lb would be fine but obviously not quite as much.
The Tranx 301 would suit 80lb a bit more.
Unless it's a very very snaggy water or you are casting very heavy lures there isn't any real benefit from going up from 65lb to 80lb.
Tractor Steve only uses 65lb dragging 40cm Line Throughs behind his boat.

Alex,

I use the 201 the same as John mentioned above spooled with 50lb PP, I've not measured how much goes on, but run the line on so it's just a fraction below the lip. The 6.2:1 is my ratio, had it a couple of years now and it's a decent enough reel, not seen much use this Autumn/Winter sadly owing to the travel restrictions. I do take my bait casters out of the box once a month and give them a spin and a wipe over when not in use incase they seize up. I know they won't but that's my OCD when it comes to my fishing gear.
