Re: Eel preservation
Good stuff.
Oddly enough the short hooklink, light bobbin, baitrunner approach is what I've been using for a few years now and I don't deep hook many eels. Mainly because I don't hook many at all!

Re: Eel preservation
I've given up.
The final straw was last time out when a tench angler caught a big eel minutes after I'd set up. It looked a good three from a way off and the bugger didn't even weigh it.

Funnily enough,I was fishing a lake recently for catfish
The angler opposite had 3 Eels on luncheon meat (I’ve never heard of any in there previously)
Two of them looked like good fish .

Re: Eel preservation
Many years ago we used to fish on Our Unity out of Brixham.
Skipper showed us a "rig" which had us doubting his sanity.
Basically it was a wire coat hanger straightened out and bent into a L shaped boom with the arm about a foot long
A 10/0 hook was attached by threading it on the wire and a few twists to secure it.
2lb weight tied to the angle in the boom and off you go.
Most congers were lip hooked and there were no shortage of them.

The preservation of the Eel is obviously high , just as it is on here for the pike

Re: Eel preservation
I’ve never deep hooked a big eel, they seem to struggle getting a half mackerel and pair of size four trebles down! Genuinely that’s how I’ve caught all my better ones ( whilst piking)and they are all hooked in the lip, admittedly I get about four million dropped runs on that setup
