Photos Lumby from the best show yesterday? What made it the best?

It's the Lonk breeder's annual show. reputed to have been going on as a sheep fair/show for well over 250 years. Although my research hasn't been able to find any evidence. Yet. It was the same day as the newly titled Herdwick World Championship - which has been hijacked by commercial interests in the for of the Herdy company. Loada b******s. Lonks rule, OK!



Nos such selling out for Lonk breeders! Sheep breeding and showing is inclusive. For the third year on the trot Tracy and her tup took the champion's rosette.

Give or take the odd year around 250, tradition is important.

It is indeed. There's certainly been an event of some sort there since the early 1800s. For a time there was a competition to climb a greasy pole to get a leg of mutton. I think I'll suggest i's reinstated! Another report in a book says that in the days when sheep were sold there Lonk men 'went on the rant' for a week and had to crawl back home. They still like a tipple.

It's a strange looking depiction of a sheep, and I don't know what the significance of the Masonic symbols is, but it looks like a pretty old pub sign.

These tup prices can be a bit iffy. The owner was keeping a half share in the sheep, so the buyer paid only half the hammer price.

With sheep's propensity to find ever more ingenious ways to die, you'd still keep a very close eye on it at £52½ grand!
