Pipe Desk (industrial pipe?)

Post by Andrew »

thinking about a new desk but my needs are a bit different than a standard shop bought desk. for one i need it shorter but with height adjustment if needed(add an extra length of short pipe). Going for quite a big L shape section in corner of room maybe 5x6ft. will be side for work computer office type crap with 3 monitors and a workbench side.

thinking of using this type of threaded pipe and fixtures,

apparently it can be quit stable but type of material, finish etc the prices vary quite a fair amount like £20-£30 more for the same part like a flange that might cost £5 but diff material.

wondering what peoples thoughts are on what kind to go for and diameter(1" ?) looking for affordability no point spending on pipe then wood and turns out will cost more than a shop bought desk. i guess some of you trade guys might have a good idea where best place to get it too ?

Looks like a rod pod!

I was going to suggest a musical keyboard stand until I saw the size you want. I use one with some MDF as a height adjustable table for photographing stuff on.

e.g. https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=keyboard+s ... _sb_noss_1

ive got this brain fart of an idea to use a vintage style recliner as my computer chair but its much shorter than a standard desk chair. its great for gaming and using vr in elite dangerous with flight stick etc but for general computer use its bloody terrible with the desk height and using keyboard/mouse i need swivels and brackets etc. if recliner doesn't work out i can just whack on a couple of inches of pipe to raise it and use my usual chair. making it a little modular. pipe looks good for attaching joysticks throttles and rudders.

The alternative to that screw-in piping could be this kind of thing: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275210136401?

Maybe more flexible, as you can unclamp some joints to change the configuration if you want something different in the future...

Where do you live? I have a mate who's got some of this stuff spare in S London, new, unused, stored inside. PM me if that's of interest, and I'll share what they have. If you can pick it up, I'm sure they'd do it half price or less.

Glasgow. I had a look at that stuff but it seems a bit bulky/stands out more. Not keen on the diameter. Maybe too industrial. The threaded stuff when painted with a nice bit of wood on top might actually look cool in a living room :laughs:
