Sort of looks right, and no doubt a close inspection shows it's close to the breed standard. I'm getting better at guessing what a sheep will sell for these days, so I must be soaking something up!
TBH I think a lot of it is fashion. Same breeders got the record 9000gns price a couple of years ago. People are wanting to get that bloodline into their flock. When the time comes they'll be able to put in a sale catalogue that a sheep was 'got by the £8000gns Howard tup' in the hope it will boost the interst and sale price. There seems to be three with deep pockets who will go over 5000gns, but even 'average' farmers will spend around 3000gns on a tup every so often. In this case two breeders bought the tup.
It's a murky world though. Other breeds have record prices in five or six figures. Rumour has it that it the vendors in those cases give the purchaser a hefty discount as opposed to the £5 or £10 'lucky money' usually on offer. The game being to get a headline catching price to boost the average next year.

I much prefer to watch sheepdogs work than run in trials. Working they can think for themselves some of the time without lots of commands.
