Decking

Post by jack »

Hi all can anyone recommend a good oil for wooden decking that 'soaks in' and won't peel or flake? Tried Ronseal type oil but after a winter it started to peel. Ta.

Thanks Alan never thought of that! Would something like Cuprinol suffice or would you use something else?

Slightly off topic, but I read recently that decking is supposed to be laid with the grooved side down. I thought 'surely f*****g not' but a bit of digging says yes, 99%of people do it wrongly! Who knew?!

I'm sure I read somewhere that the grooves are mainly there to help prevent warping

Many boards are grooved both sides nowadays laid with the heavier groove down, this is done to stabilise the wood I believe.

I understand that Carl, but there's over 60 sq metres of it. I think it may be too expensive.

It will be initially
But the cost and time savings over a few years will cover that cost.
Quick jet wash in the spring and it’s good to go.
Wood looks great when it’s first done
But one year later it’s knackered and it’s a constant battle to make it look good again

Mines been down nearly 10 years, jetwashed and oiled every spring and looks better now than it did when it was done. Lovely deep golden brown colour.

My neighbour put some grey plastic / composite decking down 18 months ago in his south facing rear garden..... on sunny warm days last summer it was too hot to walk on barefoot!!
Useless when his grand kids come round as they burnt their feet!! Something to think about when planning your project!
Love the hit!
