No, they're strictly for the collection Dave. Besides, they've got one treble too many for that size lure in my opinion.

I've used 'Wood Vamps', but not before I've doctored them by removing the middle hook and repositioning the front one.

This pair of 'woodys' are a little too good for that treatment though :pipe:

Image
I tend to crush the barbs on all the hooks on my pike sized lures John. Never noticed the 3 hooked baits of these sizes being any more problematic for unhooking than those with 2 hooks...nice baits there mate, vamps are one of my favourites
Proper plugs, vamps, mate

Just personal preferences about hooks i guess?.

I don't crush barbs on lure hooks, but often remove a third treble. As often as not, it's the tail treble on slightly larger baits. There's one in particular - the 6" Mann's 'Super Stretch 1 Minus' - that l nearly always found hooked up on the front belly treble, which too often saw the tail treble hooked up externally on smaller pike, close to their eyes. So, I've replaced the tail hooks on all of mine with a little Colorado blade attached directly to the tail split ring.

Must be something about that particular bait that makes pike target its head? External hooking is not usually an issue with smaller baits though. (Or bigger pike! :laughs: ).
I think of all the old wooden plug designs, the Vamp/Runt head shape is THE Classic style

Sometimes I think, with smaller fish, the 2nd belly treble can actually help avoid the tail hook doing that John....it finds a hold around the mouth area before the tail hook hits an iffy place on the fish, such as near the eye. Sounds daft, but something i`ve observed over the years...dodgy tail hook holds have usually been with 2 hook baits  Obviously 3 hook baits can be more hassle if they get caught in the net, but with crushed barbs and modern rubberised net meshes it`s not really an issue (and mini bolt croppers to chop a hook if need be)

That's what I love about Heddon's Mark. Makers of perhaps the most iconic plugs ever, but also some really wild designs too.

Take this 'Cousin II' (early '70s). Crazy looking bait!

Love that design. One i`m on the lookout for, if I can find a decent priced one. Any idea of what the function of the wire loop on the nose is John? Is it just an alternative line tie or something else?

Pretty sure it's a deflector Mark, to make the lure less prone to snagging when bumping snags or the bottom.

Another recent addition to my classic Heddon hoard. My Shakespeare copy 'Hunchback' can now be relegated (or promoted, depending which way you look at it) into the 'working' collection. It amazes me how Shakespeare got away with such a close copy?

Heddon may have supplied the bodies to Shakespeare? They do seem identical so that may explain it. I know Heddon supplied some Jap lure shops with blanks to spray in their own patterns....nice little baits those, another Heddon model i`ll be getting hold of given the chance

I know I've already posted this picture of a Japanese market 'Big Bud' I've ordered (on my 'Wanted' thread), but I've just tracked down the pattern name in one of the 'Megabass tuned' Heddon 'Big Bud' colour charts: Tsuchinoko

"In Japanese folklore, the Tsuchinoko, literally translating to "child of hammer" or "child of dirt", is a snake-like being. The name tsuchinoko is prevalent in Western Japan, including Kansai and Shikoku; the creature is known as bachi hebi in Northeastern Japan". Apparently it has a taste for alcohol and a special ability to leap into the air and then leap again while still airborne. (Sounds like me, most Friday nights!) :laughs:

I just love all that stuff!

There are a few other Heddon classics too Dave. Special colours for the quirky Japanese market only (or 'pro shop' custom tuned colours).

Big Buds, Tigers and Crazy Crawlers mostly. One of my favourites is the Crazy Crawler - there's a clear bodied version with a couple of dice rattling inside it! (They do a "Bud' version of that too).
