Looking at the back of the boat what side do you have the transducer ?

Don't know what version of Helix 5 you have or whether it was ok and now not?
If it was then reset all sonar to default and try again.
Make sure your on the latest software.
If still messing around... Try changing these settings.

Set Chirp to high, so it only pings on 200khz
Turn Switchfire to clear.
Adjust sensitivity to 7 (or 6-8)
Surface clutter 2-4.

Other thing to try is to set max depth to a few feet higher than the depth you know for the water you fish.

Depth issues were quite common on Earlier models late Gn2 and Gn3 were OK.
My solix did it for a while but a software update sorted it. My depth when in 5ft of water would fluctuate anywhere from 2-1000+ft.

Good luck

Are you using another FF at the same time ?
You can sometimes get interference from another electronic device .........

Maybe just try one without the other ?
The first stage in a process of elimination ?
If its still the same then you can be sure the problem is with the unit ........

I was thinking this as I have tried lowrance turned off it’s a bit better but not very consistent would it be the transducer to close or the unit it’s self

Electronic noise aka interference.

Only one FF/sonar on at a time, wired direct to the battery with an inline fuse.
